In the industrial and post-industrial societies many issues had been included in the subject of social movements. Towards the end of the 19th century and within the beginning years of the 20th century, class based interpretations of social movements would be acknowledged without any refusal. However, in the s and the 30s, with the rise of the nationalist movements in Europe, objections were raised against class based interpretation.
While a group of theoreticians talked about formation of atomized human masses and massification as a result of destruction of class borders and identities, the other group of theoreticians objected this outlook by maintaining class perspective. The main stress on the social movements since the s has moved from class, class based social movements to the new social movements defined within the axis of identity and culture.
Ecologic, ethnic, feminist, locality movements which started in Europe and America have been quite influential in this transformation. It has been argued that the emergent change could not be explained with classic perspectives of sociology and new theoretical approaches were required. The rise of new social movements is closely related with realization process and development fields of capitalism.
