A story within a story within a story - the Laughing Man, a comic book like super-hero, has various adventures moving between the Chinese-French border - getting into dangerous situations but usually defeating his enemies - in parallel - there is an adventure between "the Chief" and a girl, Mary, he is apparently having a relationship with.

Especially the way his breathing was somehow vital to really understanding both his appearance and the painful things hiding underneath the gruesome exterior. Besides posture, eyes and speech, it is breathing that gives a glimpse to the state of mind the breather is actually in.

I appreciated the prose of Salinger as I always do, and further appreciated how entirely unique his creativity was. I'm quite sure no one else could have conceived of this story, both the real and fantastic sides of it.
