Howdy B , May 11, That's basically what a repair in XP does, reinstalls Windows over itself. Just don't format and you won't lose any settings. It is required that your PC must be turned on when these tasks run.
If it is inconvenient for you to schedule these tasks during lunch hours or office hours, you may choose to run them during weekends or after office hours. Someone may worry: "Will it hurt the computer if the PC is on all the time? Hardware failure is often due to a change of temperature, which leads to expansion or contraction of hardware materials and thus realties in component misalignment.
Keeping a constant temperature reduces the chances of hardware failure and, of course, facilitate automatic maintenance If the computer is located in your office, why bother to worry about electricity bills? If you suspect that the problem in your PC is caused by a corrupt system file, you may run System File Checker from by typing sfc in Run.
When a dialog box pops up, you may choose either to replace a particular system file if you know exactly which file is corrupt or let the checker scan all system files recommended.
If the checker finds a damaged system file, it will propmt you to restore it. Insert the installer CD and proceed. System Information. You can access a number of troubleshooting tools in System Information under the pull menu Tools. Each tool is user-friendly and self-explanatory. The function of selected tools will be explained in the following:. System File Checker: It verifies the integrity of your system files.

An "over the top" reinstall will do what you want. It is a reinstall but doesn't overwrite programs or data. Just be sure to to put the new install in the same place the old install lives. And if you put the istall stuff on the hard drive and install from there it goes much faster and he won't need the CD to find drivers as SE will know where the install stuff came from.
Ed Fair Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions. I use 98se but couldn't find the system file checker you refer to. I have a similar but much worse problem. How can I make the old programs working without reinstalling the original software? I would appreciate all the help! You may want to start a new thread as a lot of people ignore older threads. You probably don't have any choice but to reinstall SE if you want it to work again.
There are things that were put in the registry pointing to C: and even if you were to get the 98 files properly located on D: those pointers will kill you. And a reinstall of SE is going to force a repair install of XP since the boot stuff that points to XP is going to be wiped out.

DRV - knows to be a troublemaker - must be replaced. VXD - has failed me 2 times in past - away with it! How did you fix your protection error?
Both of us figured that we should wait minutes before turning on pc. That time could be more or less because different motherboards got different capacitors and hold charge accordingly. Well, not really I was joking. The "wait 10" or 15 or 30 seconds before powering on is largely a tradition, most probably "amplified" in suggested length of wait because of this or that. A common issue is that the battery is too low on voltage because - say - you forgot your headlights on yesterday night or has failed and another less common but still happening occurrence is that your starter motor is stuck or as well gone bad.
The normal troubleshooting path would begin with a test of the battery voltage and capacity and - in case - replace it with a working one. If the car still doesn't start test the starter motor, clean its solenoid contacts, verify and if needed replace brushes, or replace it with a spare one.
Now, on a forum someone posts that since his car didn't start in the morning he replaced : battery starter engine block gearbox seats rear mirrors fuel tank. Then, as soon as he tried again, after having waited 42 hours since the refill - the car started fine.
