ZD Net used to be one of the prime sources for quality freeware utilities before they went to a subscription service. Everything with them has been about the corporate bottom line for years now. I filter Googlespam alt. Too true.

And they only have themselves to blame. Their editorial content slowly phased over from being genuinely useful stuff, to being thinly veiled advertising. About the only columns I see that are worth reading are from Jon Dvorak. The unmitigated gall of them, charging around six bucks an issue for what ammounts to nothing more than a comic-book sized collection of advertisements. They should pay people to read their crap. I don't have an objection to a magazine getting income from advertising, but it totally took over the content.

They, the publishers, were stupid enough to think that the public would continue to accept more and more of it. They CAN turn things around though. All they have to do is to get their hands on some older issues and see how things used to be done.

The server seems to check if the main page has been accessed first. Of course "they" is one of the acceptable grammatical forms to indicate male or female gender. Maybe a 5th grade class in your area is studying something like Shakespeare's Lucrece and you could join them when they get to 'Every one to rest themselves betake'. And even after the old-line grammarians put it under their ban, this anathematized singular "their" construction never stopped being used by English-speakers, both orally and by serious literary writers.

That doyen of early computing magazines, Datamation, was never particularly thick. Although the content can be good, Ziff-Davis could win awards for most horribly bloated web pages. I miss the old days, when my mailman used to complain about my Computer Shopper subscription.

XYplorer became payware, but subsequently a freeware version was available. The last of the original version is on the Pricelessware list. An excellent program which I use all the time. This helps give a view of different folders. Tabs are no substitute for a dual pane browser but they help with a few things which a dual pane browser may have been used for. This info may interest someone.

The only place this 1. How about v 13? In XYplorer files can be copied or moved by dragging and dropping them onto any of the tabs. In my view this is much better that a dual page option. It is also possible to run two or more instances of XYplorer side by side so that files can be compared, copied or moved between them. I did discover that the link on Simtel's site would work once I allowed JavaScript from DigitalRiver, so apparently they must somehow use that third party site in their download process.

What's in a Name? John Corliss. Interesting list. Can't figure out what I need to do to get the Virtual PC to recognize the program I want to run - trying to run Chessmaster Anyone used this? Ninite makes loading up a new computer a breeze. Run the executable, and Ninite installs all of them in turn, and it automatically declines the offers for bundled bloatware so many free apps try to sneak in. No muss, no fuss, no hassle. Accidentally installing unwanted bloatware is one of the greatest dangers of free software, the sanctity of Ninite aside.

For everything else, use Unchecky. The Windows Security software enabled by default in Windows 10 provides solid protection for most users, but no single antivirus utility offers bulletproof protection, especially against the latest and most clever threats. App launchers let you activate software far faster than navigating Windows, even if you use the Windows key and search for an app by name.

But Launchy can do much, much more: Open any file or folder in mere seconds, shut down your PC, or even kill processes and perform math calculations with the right plug-ins. Launchy is another Windows utility that is unto itself; however, the developers do accept donations, and we highly recommend tossing the developers a few dollars for this excellent program.

A lot of them cost money. You can even encrypt 7-Zip archives with a password to send them securely. If you spend all day unzipping massive archive files then maybe a faster utility like WinZip is worth it. For most of us, however, 7-zip is just great. Your PC might have a DVD-playing program installed if you bought a boxed system, but if not, the simply wonderful VLC media player can play your flicks and music, and podcasts, and… for free. It can even play some Blu-ray discs with a little fiddling.

You can, however, send the VideoLAN organization a donation as a thank you for its hard work. It has a challenging learning curve, but its capabilities are damned impressive once you wrap your head around it. Check out our roundup of the best free Photoshop alternatives for more no-cost programs for everything from quick and dirty tweaks to nitty-gritty image edits.

Free image editors are generally great and GIMP is looking better than ever. If you need to record or mix audio without spending big bucks on pro software, Audacity is hands-down the best option around.

This powerful open-source audio editor offers excellent production capabilities—and a dizzying array of buttons and options. Keep in mind, however, that Adobe Audition is a pro tool and not a starter option.

Revo Uninstaller wipes out everything. Revo uninstaller only takes care of the basics. WinDirStat is another free program that behaves similarly to SpaceSniffer. But what if you want to bring a deleted file back to the realm of the living? Recuva is a clean, simple undelete program from Piriform, the makers of CCleaner.

Still, Recuva has saved my bacon on more than one occasion. If you need only basic functionality, go with Sumatra PDF instead. Sumatra lacks the fancy extras found in many full-featured PDF readers, but when it comes to straight-up reading Portable Document Format files, Sumatra PDF is blazing-fast and completely accurate.

But they offer features that few people need such as the ability to edit PDFs, watermark, and annotate them. Sometimes, blasting tunes is the only thing that makes slogging through a spreadsheet or a stuffed inbox even remotely tolerable.
