The idea of substituting a beginning sound or an ending sound can be introduced long before a child is learning to read. Phonemic Awareness activities will encourage preschool and kindergarten children to play with sounds. A young child with good phonemic awareness skills will grasp the idea of decoding Word Families very quickly. If you are working with a child who is not reading at the expected level, we think that phonemic awareness should be one of the very first things that is assessed.
